It’s always the same. When presidential elections come around, people start to get really hot and bothered about them. Even people who don’t even vote yet! Well, there’s nothing wrong with being passionate about what you truly believe in - it’s only a problem if you haven’t done your homework! Politics shouldn’t be like rooting for your school team. In sports, you can always hope your team wins, and the outcome doesn’t change millions of people’s lives. In politics it does.
So before we blindly root for the ‘home team’, make sure you agree with all the things that your team stands for. Decide what is important to YOU, and whether your team is standing up for those things. The information is out there, and since both sides are doing there darndest to get people’s support, it’s a perfectly good opportunity to ask questions and expect answers.
And whatever you do, respect other people’s right to their own opinion - Especially if you expect them to respect yours! In calm discussion with people who don’t agree with your ideas, you can find out why other people feel the way they do. If you really want to convince someone that your way is right, you have to really listen and accept their way of thinking first, then show them what is better about your way. Who know? On the way you might even improve your way of thinking!
In America, we have the freedom to choose our leaders, and everyone has the right to their own opinion. Think about what you want to see changed, and then see if you can do anything to change it. Using your head is the best way to be the best American you can be.
You can also get some good ideas for getting involved at RandomKid.org. We’ll write more about them soon!
